Peyman Shokrollahi (پیمان شکراللهی) was born in Tehran. He received his bachelor (BEng) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Shiraz University, Shiraz, Iran, masters of applied science (MASc) in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada, and doctor of philosophy (PhD) in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada.
He was collaborating with Sunnybrook Hospital on sleep data analysis for investigating the medication effects on sleep and developing software for detection of eye movements on data recorded from patients during sleep. Since 2012, he is collaborating with the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto in developing surgical robots for pediatric bone biopsies. His research mainly focused on developing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) compatible tools and devices.
He started to play Santur, a Persian musical instrument, at an early age from his father, Hadi. Although Hadi is a mechanical engineer, he is passionate about music and plays Santur. As a result of his influence, Hadi inspired Peyman to learn music as well.
At the age of twelve, Peyman started studying Santur. He learned maestro Payvar’s methods of Santur performance under the supervision of Masoud Malek. Soon after graduating from Alborz high school in Tehran and passing the university entrance examination, Peyman started learning musical improvisation from maestro Mansour Saremi. After enrolling in Shiraz (Pahlavi) University to pursue Electrical and Electronics Engineering, he took an interest in folklore music from the Iranian province of Fars. He traveled through the villages of Fars to learn more about the region’s folkloric music. The results of his inquiry have led to the recording of over 30 hours of songs.
Peyman studied music theory, song writing, harmony, and counterpoint with Mohammad Reza Darvishi, Kiawasch SahebNassagh, Siavash Beyzai, and Kambiz Roshanravan. Furthermore, Peyman learned classical piano performance under supervision of Lily Sarkisian.
